The Home Office publishes recorded crime figures:
The recorded crime statistic show that domestic burglary
accounted for around a one fifth of all property crime. in
1999/2000. In the statistics for 2000/2001, this percentage had
reduced to 20%.
Around 1/3 of all domestic burglary incidents are recorded.
Recorded domestic burglary increased by 137% between 1981 and
1993 and has been declining every year since 1993. It fell by 6% in
1999/2000 with 442,602 offences recorded, of which 2, 993 were
aggravated burglary. This is 11% lower than the number of burglaries
recorded in 1990.
Statistics for 2000/2001 show a further 7.8% reduction to 402,
984 recorded offences, of which 3, 057 were recorded as aggravated
burglary.
Crime statistics for domestic burglary are gathered not just as
the number of offences in an area but as rate per 1000 people and
rate per 1000 households.
Clear-up rates for most property crimes are much lower than for
crimes against the person with less than 15% of recorded domestic
burglary offences detected in 1999/2000. The statistics for
2000/2001 show that he detection rate for domestic burglary was 14%,
however the detection rate for aggravated burglary in a dwelling was
44%.
Recorded crime statistics for England and Wales for the period
April 2000 and March 2001 are now are published for each available
for both Basic Command Unit and Crime and Disorder Reduction
Partnership Area in England and Wales.
The recorded crime figures represent those offences recorded by
the police. However, not all offences are reported to the police and
not all reported offences are recorded. Therefore, for domestic
burglary as well as the and other areas of crime, the Home Office
also conducts the British Crime Survey. every two years. The Survey
is now carried out on an annual basis (http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/bcs1.html).
