Drug offences dealt with under the Misuse of
Drugs Act 1971 and related legislation account for just over 2% of all
recorded crime in England and Wales.

The number of
persons dealt with in Great Britain for supply offences (possession
with intent to supply unlawfully, unlawful supply, and import/export)
involving Class A drugs rose from 9,700 in 1999 to 12,100 in 2000 (an
increase of 25% compared to a rise of 20% in the previous twelve
months) and well above the target set of 10%.
Seizures within the
UK involving Class A drugs increased by 10.3% in 2000, against the
target set of 10%.
Drugs with a street
value of £789 million were seized by law enforcement agencies in 2000.

Nearly 56 kg of crack was
recovered, more than double the amount in 2000 (Table 1). Just under 4
tonnes of heroin was seized, a 16% increase on the previous year. The
number of doses/tablets of ecstasy-type drugs seized rose in 2001 to
7.7 million, an increase of 17%.

The overall number of
drug seizures in 2001 rose by just under 5% to about 131,000.

In 2001, seizures
involving Class A drugs increased by 10% to just under 38,000.

Cannabis seizures
accounted for 71% of all seizures.
