Tackling drug related offending through the criminal justice system

Action to reduce the demand users place on a market through their dependency can help reduce market size.

A table of evaluated options is included at the end of this section.

The following actions are divided into those that are primarily enforcement and those that arise through direct engagement with the criminal justice system. To be effective drug related criminal justice interventions should ideally be available at all five key stages of the criminal justice process and address drug misuse needs within the context of treatment and other social care help that may be needed.

It is possible to develop proactive schemes for user dealers who have not been charged with offences of supply; user dealers are of course eligible for any of these schemes.
