Map 1 shows the distribution of residential burglaries as a hotspot volume map. This map identifies those areas where there are clusters of residential burglary. However, a map of this type may just show areas where there are high concentrations of residential properties – the areas where there is little crime possibly being rural areas. Map 2 shows the distribution of residential burglary as rates per 1000 households per annum. The rate map takes into account the distribution of residential housing, identifying areas of high risk. These maps tell two separate stories. Notice how several enumeration districts in the rate map show up as being at risk, but do not have a high geographic concentration as shown in the hotspot volume map. The rate map’s legend has also been structured around the current national average rate for residential burglary, helping to describe the areas of residential burglary vulnerability across Croydon. Both maps are best used together as each complements the other in the interpretation and targeting of crime and disorder patterns, identifying areas of high risk, with areas of significant burglary problems concentrated into small geographic areas. |
