Accessing and downloading Neighbourhood Statistics and the 2000 Index of Multiple Deprivation.

Partnerships wishing to compose an Area Profile would also benefit from the online information provided from the National Statistics website and the Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) website.

The Office for National Statistics provide a rich resource of Neighbourhood Statistics for viewing and downloading at:

http://neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/Default.asp?nsid=false&CE=True&SE=True

These statistics include income support claimant numbers, recent population measures, and educational attainment scores. The Neighbourhood Statistics online service can be tested by following this simple example.

  • Enter a postcode of a location familiar to you and which is within the partnership area (e.g. SW1A 1AA). Entering these details will return the ward the postcode covers and it’s local authority.
  • Select the ward level data as the information you wish to view (i.e. hit the ‘go’ button listed alongside the ward name).
  • The next page will list the wards covered by this local authority. The ward of interest as been pre-selected from this list (you may need to scroll down the list to view the ward that has been selected). Users can select other individual wards of interest, or perform multiple ward selections by following the on-screen instructions.
  • Select all the wards for the local authority area (i.e. so that all are highlighted)
  • From the options to the right of menu choose ‘key stats’
  • This operation will return a table listing the Neighbourhood Statistics for the chosen wards from which the partnership can compare and contrast neighbourhood differences.

This data is also available for downloading as a comma delimited file that can be imported into statistical analysis packages and/or a GIS.

The DETR provides a facility to access and download deprivation scores for both the ward and authority levels. The 2000 Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) is available for downloading at:

www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/Product.asp?vlnk=9421&Pos=1&ColRank=2&Rank=272

Deprivation data for the partnership area can be selected from the downloaded file.

Companies listed in the Contacts  section provide training and consultancy services that helps partnerships link Neighbourhood Statistics, the IMD and other data sources to geographic areas and for analysis with crime and disorder data.
