Informing the community in the London Borough of Brent. The Brent Crime Mapping Project was particularly innovative in its approach to informing local residents and businesses about community safety issues. One of the most successful formats that the Brent Project used was its quarterly ‘Crime Awareness Newsletter’ (distributed externally to councillors, community groups, local businesses, and made available at libraries and Council One Stop Shops). This newsletter described recent crime trends, provided a platform to promote good news stories about crime and disorder reduction, and gave details of new grant opportunities residents could apply for to help improve the security of their own property. The newsletter also acted as a useful press release that could prompt local newspaper and television coverage of the community safety work in Brent and bring into discussion through community groups issues or fears that local residents wanted more focus. By involving the public and informing them about the proactive crime and disorder prevention initiatives the Council and Police were involved in, the effect was to raise community satisfaction in policing and community safety services. |
