Dalston Partnership Policing Project (London Borough of Hackney, February 2001)

The Dalston Partnership Policing Project is funded by the Home Office Targeted Policing Initiatives. Dalston is one of two town centre hotspots for crime, particularly crimes that relate to drug use, i.e. retail crime, thefts, robberies and burglaries. The project used crime and disorder information and local area demographic profiles to inform the initial bid. The use of GIS greatly helped the planning stage, plus assisted in the design of iniatives to tackle the problem. The project is carrying out a 3 pronged approach,

  • community/retail

  • policing, and

  • drugs work.

It includes a Business Crime Reduction Officer, working closely with the local market, shops and shopping centre; a Community Initiatives Officer, to engage the local community, particularly those hard to reach groups, a Research and Information Officer, and a dedicated well resourced police team, working alongside a Drugs Arrest Referral Scheme with drugs workers employed in arrest referral, treatment, and outreach work.
