Defining Benchmarking

Benchmarking can be defined as "a process of measuring your service’s processes and performance and systematically comparing them to the performance of others in order to seek ‘best practice’" (How to do Benchmarking - A practitioners guide: Jane Foot, IAG http://www.iag.org.uk/publications.asp. Benchmarking in this sense is undertaken to drive performance improvement and management. Benchmarking also provides a reference to help you decide whether the levels of crime overall, or of particular offences, are high compared to those in other partnerships.

There are two broad approaches to benchmarking:

  • Quantitative benchmarking
  • Qualitative benchmarking
