A Proactive Approach to Data Management

Often data management systems developed by partnerships are based upon parameters imposed by available data and storage systems. Starting from this point a data management strategy might consist of a strategy to improve the quality of available data and the potential for making different sources of data more compatible.

However, the starting point for a proactive data management strategy is that data management systems are led by data analysis and auditing needs. The first step would be to scope the analysis and auditing requirements:

  • What tasks do we need to carry out when auditing crime and disorder?

  • What data will be required in order to do this?

  • What data are currently available?

  • What are the limitations of current data?

The next step would be to develop a strategy for managing data:

  • What action is required to realise data requirements?

  • Who is going to take responsibility for improving the availability / quality of data?

  • What targets have been set for improving data management?

  • Does the Crime and Disorder Strategy contain a strategy for data management?

  • Is the strategy for data management in the Crime and Disorder Strategy reflected in

  • agency’s own strategies?
