How Hot Spot Analysis Should be Performed

Contained here is an example of best practice with regard to hot spotting. Readers should recall the comments at the start of this toolkit that there is no "right" way of identifying hot spots. There are so many different ways and circumstances to apply hot spots that it is very difficult to present a definitive approach. Nonetheless, the approach listed here contains the essential components but is sufficiently general to accommodate specific applications.

The method for identifying hot spot has three distinct steps:

  1. How to measure the heat: Count or rates?
  2. Global tests
  3. Isolating hotspots
