The Media

Consideration needs to be given to the management of the media. The report needs to be written in such a way as to reduce the risk of misrepresentation and selective reporting. It would be advisable to bring in PR advisors within the local authorities and the police at this stage if they have not been a member of the audit team. The issues to consider are:

  • Crime and disorder issues will arouse media interest – this represents both an opportunity and a risk.

  • Good publicity will stimulate interest in the consultation phase and in the subsequent strategy.

  • Bad publicity may increase fear of crime and stigmatise communities.

  • Consider putting resources into a well-managed media launch.
