Sources of Funding

There are a number of potential funding sources available for those seeking to implement security-related initiatives on and around public transport systems in Great Britain. Although it is not possible to exhaustively identify current funding sources for practitioners, as sources of funding are continually changing, a number of sources and/or schemes that have offered funding and may be appropriate in this context include:

  • the Home Office (e.g. CCTV Fund, Safer Communities Programme, Neighbourhood Renewal);

  • Strategic Rail Authority;

  • Scottish and Welsh Assemblies;

  • Regional Government Offices (e.g. Crime and Disorder Act Regional Directors Funds);

  • Department for Transport;

  • Transport for London;

  • Local Authorities; and

  • European funding sources.

It is important to note that each of these funding sources is associated with a number rules or criteria to be met by applicants. Bids for funding will at the least need to be compliant with these rules and in some circumstances, be match funded. Practitioners seeking funding for initiatives will need to be innovative and undertake their own research to identify potential funding sources.

There are a number of persons who may be able to assist with locating and applying for funding. For example, a number of commercial companies are available to assist with locating funding sources for a fee. Furthermore, local BTP Crime Reduction Officers should be able to assist with identifying potential sources of funding, as should the Regional Government Offices.
