Prevalence of Offending

Findings from the 1998/99 Youth Lifestyles Survey are that:

  • The average age at which offending began was 13.5 for boys and 14 for girls

  • Amongst those aged 12 to 13 a similar proportion of boys and girls offended (and used drugs and drank regularly)

  • After the age of 14 the difference between boys and girls becomes marked

  • Over the age 17, male offenders outnumber women offenders by a ratio of about 3:1
