
Area differences in offending
Recorded crime figures and victimisation surveys show higher crime rates in inner-city
areas and poor council estates (see the British Crime
Survey: Home Office Statistical
Bulletin)
Flood et al's analysis of the 1998/99 Youth Lifestyles Survey revealed a relationship between the type
of area lived in and persistent and serious offending. Twice the proportion of men
aged 12-30 living in inner-city areas were persistent or serious offenders as in rural
areas. See figure below:
