Deterrence

Deterrence information based on data analysis of the 1998/99 Youth Lifestyles Survey will be published shortly as a Home Office Research Study. Young people (12-30 year olds) were asked what would stop them committing a number of crimes. Initial figures are given in the table below:

Shoplifting Stealing from someone you know Being violent
It is wrong 46 47 45
Wouldn't be tempted 23 34 17
Chances of getting caught 11 4 3
Harm/shame family 6 5 5
Problems of having a criminal record 6 1 5
Fear of punishment 5 2 9
What others would think 3 7 5
Fear of retaliation - - 1
Nothing would stop me - - 8

A MORI Youth Survey carried out for Youth Justice Board in February 2000 asked respondent pupils what do young people think has the biggest effect on stopping young people committing crimes? The findings were:

Deterrence Type Percentage (%)
Fear of being caught 45%
Worry about how parents react 45%
Type of punishment 24%
Fear of being punished 23%
Attitude of friends 1%
Meeting the victim 11%
Getting a good education 11%
Interesting things to do 16%
