British Crime Survey
The British Crime Survey (BCS) is a large, nationally representative survey of
adults aged 16 and over living in private households in England and Wales. It has
been conducted eight times since 1982 (since 1992 it has been conducted every two
years). In future, it will be conducted annually.
The main purpose of the BCS is to provide a measure of crime, including crimes
not reported to the police. Each survey measures experiences of victimisation in the
preceding year. The survey also collects information about a range of crime-related
issues, including concern about crime, perceptions of disorder and contact with and
attitudes towards the police.
