Impact
In the graph below respondents were asked to rate on a scale of 1
to 10 how much fear of crime affected their quality of life .Rural
dwellers are less likely to say that crime has a great effect on
their quality of life.

These results are perhaps not surprising, as actual levels of
risk, as discussed above, are lower in rural areas. However, concern
about crime is not only related to actual risk but also perceptions
of the consequences of victimisation. Even those with a
statistically low risk may still justifiably worry about what would
happen if they were to be victimised.
A considerable amount of work is being done on quality of life
issues under the Agenda 21 heading. The drive for sustainable
development aims to protect and enhance the environment. It
encompasses environmental, social and economic goals including
community safety.
The DETR has produced a framework for Sustainable Development
with a menu of 29 indicators, including fear of crime.
