Originating, transit and destination countriesCountries across the world can be identified as source, transit and/or destination countries. Most countries, however, sit either side of the origin/destination divide, with the former being characterised by poverty and the latter by relative affluence. The upheavals in countries suffering from economic, political and social disruption particularly provide opportunities for exploiting women through promises of better life in more affluent countries. At the same time the stricter border controls and entry requirements in European and other western countries means that those who wish to migrate may be susceptible to the lure of individuals or organisations involved in trafficking.
