Sexual Exploitation

The study described above, estimated that the scale of trafficking in women into and within the UK lies within the range of 142 and 1420 women a year.[1] However there is considerable disagreement about the

extent of the problem with many professionals believing that the figure is much higher.

The Metropolitan Police Service report that foreign women now make up the majority of women working in prostitution in off-street sites; that a large proportion of these will have illegal immigrant status and that a proportion of them will have been trafficked.

Sex industries globally are remarkably flexible, shifting locations and the form and content of what they offer in response to market demands and the relative strength or weakness of law enforcement and monitoring. It follows that trafficked women and children may be found anywhere in the country.

In terms of entry to the country, the majority are believed to enter through main airports, ports and via the Channel Tunnel. Certain nationalities of traffickers and victims tend to use specific routes that are being identified by international agencies.
