Part II of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 provides for special measures to be used in court to protect vulnerable and intimidated witnesses.

The Children Act 1989 places a duty on local authorities to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in their area. The guidance in Safeguarding Children Involved in Prostitution should be followed where there are concerns that a child may be involved in prostitution. This guidance reinforces and expands upon guidance on children involved in prostitution already included in the inter-agency guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children and the Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families. This aims to ensure that the approach to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children involved in prostitution and the assessment of their needs is consistent with the approaches used for all children.[1]

Guidelines on interviewing children and vulnerable intimidated witnesses are contained in Achieving Best Evidence (2001).
