Support during court proceedings

Victims of trafficking need to be seen as vulnerable witnesses. One of their key fears is that of having to face their trafficker/exploiter in court. It follows that evidential statements should be videoed, and cross-examination in court should be via a video link. There should be measures taken to protect the confidentiality of the victim and their identity. Specific safety measures are likely to be required during the court proceedings. The court has a responsibility to make directions for special measures where a witness is identified as vulnerable or intimidated in accordance with the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999. This can include use of screens, use of TV links, and clearing of the public gallery. The Victim Support Witness Service is available in every criminal court and this provides information and support to witnesses before, during and after court.

Information on the Victim Support Witness Service is available at www.victimsupport.org
