Demographic/Social Trend Analysis
This type of analysis is centred on an examination of the nature of demographic
changes and their impact on crime and disorder as well as on the deeper analysis of
social factors recorded by the other partners such as unemployment, homelessness and
truancy which might underlie changes or trends in crime and disorder.
When the data is aggregated it provides a valuable input to inform and influence
national and local policy making. Through the joining together of the partner’s data
this form analysis will help illuminate where future pressures are likely to arise
for the partnership.
Example - Demographic/Social trend analysis
A seaside town experienced a substantial seasonal rise in crime of all types, particularly
burglary, every Summer commencing in June. The Summer was a time of an influx of visitors
and also saw an increase in arrests for the possession of heroin.
Analysis revealed that most of those arrested were young unemployed people from
the nearest largest city and were attracted to the town due to the availability of
cheap bed and breakfast accommodation and the availability of heroin.
The area around where the bed and breakfast accommodation was situated had also
seen a large increase in crime and disorder. The analysis provided the basis for partnership
working to tackle the seasonal problem and provide diversion for those involved.
