Sources of Information

Different types of information are subject to different legal requirements. These requirements must be satisfied before information can be exchanged, failure to do so could result in expensive civil litigation or possibly criminal proceedings. In the context of crime reduction, information tends to fall into the 6 categories:

Non-Personal Data

De-personalised Data

Data in the Public Domain

Personal (Sensitive) Data

Meta-Data (Data about Data)

Information may helpfully be categorised in this way. Consideration can then be given to whether the information you intend to exchange fulfils all the relevant legal requirements.

Crime & Disorder Partners should consult widely in identifying, which sources of data will assist them. The end use will largely determine what type of information is required. Different types of information may involve different legal considerations the use of personal (sensitive) information being the most restricted and should only be used where there is non reasonable alternative.
