Welcome to this new mini site which is under development at the moment and will be updated fully over the forthcoming year.

Key Facts

Between 2006/07 and 2007/08 the number of recorded offences of vehicle crime fell by 14% to 656,549 offences. This represented a downward trend in recent years and a fall of 39% since 2002/03 when the National Crime Reporting Standard was first introduced. In terms of the individual vehicle crimes offences, theft of vehicles fell by 12% between 2006/07 and 2007/08, aggravated vehicle taking by 5%, theft from vehicles by 14% and vehicle interference by 22%. Figures for the British Crime Survey (BCS) also showed a fall in overall vehicle crime. The 2007/08 Survey measured 1,497,000 offences, an 11% decrease compared with the 2006/07 Survey. This was mainly due to the fall in theft from vehicles (12%.)

This long term fall in vehicle crime suggests that the problem solving approach adopted by the police and their local partners across many parts of the country has proved successful, particularly in reducing repeat victimisation. The motor industry’s continuing improvements in vehicle security have also made a significant contribution. Nevertheless, the Government, the police, local agencies and the motor industry remained committed to continuing to work together to ensure that the decrease in vehicle crime is maintained. The public also have a key part to play, particularly by making sure they lock their cars , do not leave items on view in parked cars and, where possible parking in areas that are not vulnerable to these type of offences.
