Action for Justice

‘Action for Justice’ is the implementation plan to take forward the recommendations in ‘Speaking Up for Justice’, the report on Vulnerable or Intimidated Witnesses in the Criminal Justice System in England and Wales.

Key points

‘Speaking Up for Justice’ recommended a coherent and integrated scheme to provide appropriate support and assistance for vulnerable or intimidated witnesses, with proposals covering the investigation stage, pre-trial support, the trial and beyond. Some key changes include:

  • improvements in the identification of vulnerable or intimidated witnesses;

  • measures to provide protection and reassurance for intimidated witnesses;

  • greater communication about the needs of a witness;

  • use of appropriate interview methods and pre-trial support;

  • a range of measures available for use at the trial.
