Violence in all its forms is of paramount public concern. It has a devastating and far-reaching effect on victims, victims' families and the community at large. Similarly, the fear of violence greatly impacts on many people across society.
That is why the Government has prioritised all violence with injury as part of its overarching framework of Public Service Agreements. The Violent Crime Unit (VCU) owns the widened PSA 23 priority action 1, to reduce all violence with injury and tackle the most serious violence, serious sexual offences and domestic violence.
The vision of the Tackling Violence Action Plan (TVAP) published in February 2008 was to save lives, reduce harm and protect the public to support the delivery of Public Service Agreement (PSA) 23(1). The TVAP framework focused on seriousness, managing risk and support for victims. In August 2009 we published An Action Plan for Tackling Violence 2008-11 One Year On. This report shows the progress made over the first year of implementation and introduces the new wider commitment to reduce all violence with injury. We will not lose our focus on seriousness and will continue to monitor our progress closely and build on the positive work we have done to address public concern over all forms of violence
Our aims and objectives in tackling violence are to:
We are committed to working closely with our partners and the public at all levels - neighbourhood, local and national. Delivering on those aims should enable people to live freely, contribute to their local community and prosper in their daily lives, and that goal is at the heart of the Home Office's approach to reducing crime.
