What are Weeks Of Action?
For many years brief and intensive periods of partnership activity specifically aimed at small areas have been apart of the armoury of many Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs), these are often called Weeks of Action.
Their aims have been to reduce crime and make people feel better about the areas in which they live. Many have had a strong police-led enforcement focus, whilst others have included a range of partners and aimed for greater sustainability of impact.
"Weeks of Action" have recently developed a higher profile because of the concerted effort by the Home Office to support partnerships in delivering the current PSA1 target– to reduce crime by 15% and by more in high crime areas (HCAs). 44 areas have been identified as being of highest priority to delivery due to the potential impact of their performance on PSA1. During initial discussions about how partnerships might be supported to make the greatest impact, the significant potential of effective Weeks of Action was identified.
Whilst many CDRPs have carried out similar initiatives, Nottingham CDP has been in the vanguard of recent development, championed by its Chief Executive, Alan Given, a previous head of the Home Office Police Standards Unit. This guidance is largely based on what Nottingham has done, including their detailed planning process, to make their Weeks of Action both effective and sustainable. It also draws on experience and learning from other areas and from related activities or projects. Future versions of this document will draw increasingly on input from partnerships across England and Wales.
The key differences between what is described here and most similar activity with which readers may have been involved before, are the major roles for the local communities and the wide range of partners, in addition to the police, involved in planning, implementation and follow-up.
